Australian Currency - a guide for travellers

Australia's currency is the Australian dollar (AUD). One dollar will buy you a cheap ice cream on a stick or a small chocolate bar. A McDonald's Big Mac currently retails for $3.45 (making the Australian dollar pretty fairly valued according to The Economist's Big Mac Index). In 2006 the Australian Dollar is trading at around US$0.75, £0.44, €0.62 and ¥86 (check xe.com for current data).

Australian Coins

Australia currently uses 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins - although some vending machines, parking meters and toll booths don't accept 5c coins.

Australian Bank Notes

Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of plastic bank notes. Apart from providing greater security against counterfeiting, you can also put them through a washing machine as many times as you like* and they will still be perfectly useable.
