When Australia became an independent nation Sydney and Melbourne both wanted to be the capital city. Since neither of them could decide, a compromise was reached and the Australian Capital Territory was formed, about 200 miles southwest of Sydney. While it was a nice idea at the time, in retrospect, the ACT is in the middle of nowhere; it's freezing in winter and boiling in summer. It's a shame they didn't put the capital city at Jervis Bay (the area originally designated as the main port for the ACT), which is a lot prettier, and has much nicer weather.
